50 Books to Read Before You Die - Update

I love to read. Last May I started with "50 Books to Read Before You Die". Life got in the way and in the end I didn't finish the list before 2011. At all. I only read a few books. But I thought it would be fun to give you a little update. As it turned out, these classic books out of the English literature aren't even in our library. Which makes a little sense, because I live in the Netherlands. But still, I would thought that these books would be available. I think my new plan of attack is more realistic. I'm just going to read some one by one and I might tell you something about them if I really liked it. And every now and then I'll give you an update. How about that?

The last time we spoke about this I just finished reading the Lord of the Rings Triology in 3 days. Which was so much fun. Now I've read Wuthering Heights, which was beautiful. And 1984, which was a bit creepy and didn't have a happy ending. But really gave you something to think about. I re-read Pride and Prejudice, my favourite book. Anyway, although I enjoy reading classics, I also love a good modern book every now and then. So I'm going to take it slow and see where it ends. Have you read a lot?

DIY inspiration: Postcard Journal

I am terribly sorry that I can not say where this idea came from. When I'm browsing and looking for wonderful idea's and lovely blogs, I often stumble upon a wonderful DIY. I normally just save the pictures in my 'DIY' folder and mention where I got it from. But in this case I forgot. Sorry.

This is a lovely idea to replace that old journal you really never write in.

You can make your own and write something wonderful you did every day. Next year you can use it all over again and it will remind you of all the wonderful things you did the year before. It's a simple and cheap idea, but I love it.

Looking back: My 2010 to do list

Maybe one of you, who also was here a year ago, remembers my DIY todo list for 2010.
If you weren´t there, shame on you ;), you can read it here. I was full of ideas and seriously thinking I could commit myself and do all of those things. 2010 brought some amazing things for me, but almost none of them were planned. Anyway, it seemed like a nice idea to look back on that list and tell you what I did.

1. Make a piece of clothing from scratch. Well, all I can say about that one is: it's also on my 2011 to do list.

2. Make a cookbook of all the amazing recipes I tried. I actually did that one! It's still on my old laptop and there aren't that much recipes in it. But I'm looking forward to expanding that collection next year.

3. Try my dad's old camera collection. There was a moment in 2010 that I was walking near the Louvre in Paris with one of those old camera's in my hand. Seriously. With a film in it and everything. And then, after a few decades the battery was empty. My dad tried the camera a few days before and it was still fine. That didn't spoil the fun though. Paris is amazing. I actually went there twice this year. Ahh. All those wonderful memories.

4. Get creative with canvas bags. I bought one. To start making cute ones. And then I discovered this really cheap pretty bags at a store in the Netherlands. For only one euro. I am that person that tells the person in the store that I don't want a bag, because I have my own. Yeah I know, probably annoying when you're behind the counter. But I think it's a very good thing to always have a extra bag with you. It's good for the environment, we use way to many plastic bags. So this store (Blokker) has really cute ones with a tiny thing to put them in. Perfect for in your handbag. I didn't really need to make those myself. Sorry.

5. Make a huge painting. No. Still no huge painting. But I did paint a whole room by myself, (my sister and a friend were wonderful help) In cute purple/lavender colours. Does that count?

6. Photograph. Yes. Did that. A lot.

7. Make a video. I started making a simple stop motion, but never got around to finish it. And I made a silly video of me walking. It was just an experiment and I can't recall me showing it to anyone. I'm a bit ashamed. The song is really pretty though. But because I really like you all. Here it is:

I just got my new camera, which isn't really meant for filming, but I wanted to try that. And this was the result. Quite stupid I know.

And that was the list.
Not that great of a year it would seem. But I'm very very grateful for everything that has happened. I've done some wonderful things and met a lot of inspiring people. Including starting my own little Etsyshop. Not a single sale. But I have a lot of fun working on that. And the travelling was great. I've been to so many places this year. Let's hope that 2011 is a much fun as 2010!

I always find it relaxing to look for inspiration for my home. So many people have gorgeous ideas and interiors. That's why we show you some of the inspiration we found every now and then.

Don't you just love it when people take random, ordinary things who otherwise wouldn't be noticed and turn them into beautiful, eye-catching decoration?

Makes me want run up and down the stairs and count. It's a creative idea to make a simple staircase something pretty and fun.

I wouldn't mind going to the toilet here. ;)

Someone once told me that our blog was filled one half with cute posts and the other half with apologizing for not posting. Which is probably true. We started this blog a long time ago and the amount of time that goes into updating a blog is a lot more than you would think. Our lives have become more busy and our priorities are elsewhere. Still, I do remember the fun I had updating These Lovely Things. I would be sad to give up our little blog. You know what I'm going to do? First, not promising you to update this blog, because time has told us that I won't do it anyway. And second, just have fun and not make it something I have to do.

A Fresh Fall Start

Dear Followers,

I think we're there. Our fresh start. I've spent a part of the afternoon redesigning 'These Lovely Things'. After a few days in bed with the flu and a terrible cold I was fed up with the Fall season. But then I went looking for chestnuts and acorns. The trees are turning red, orange and yellow. And it's that time of year again where you can drink hot chocolate while you can hear it rain outside. Isn't it lovely? It's autumn again!

Hopefully everything is going to be fun the next couple of weeks. I'm going to try to post regulary. And as always, I would absolutely love your comments! What do you think of our slightly new design?

Monday's Melody

I feel almost ashamed to post Monday's Melody. Fleur and I came up with Monday's Melody to make sure we'd post something every week and to replace 'Our favourite song at the moment'. But as it turns out, we can't even commit ourselves to post one regular post regulary. ^^

Anyway, the most important thing is: this week there is a Monday's Melody.

I like so many different types of music. Last week I was slightly obsessed with the Pride and Prejudice soundtrack. Couldn't stop listening. 'A Postcard to Henry Purcell' makes me think about live a few centuries ago. Don't get me wrong, I love pop and rock music, but a little classical music every now and then is so relaxing.

Tattoos

I'm not really a tattoo person. I never considered taking one, nor which desigin I would like. But a few weeks ago I talked about tattoos with a friend, who was considering taking a tattoo. I was a bit surprised, but when I thought about it, tattoos can be a great way to remember a certain moment or person in your life. I'm not that fond of the 'forever' part, but I get why some people find it very important. We talked about having a word or sentence that means a lot to you tattooed. I immediately thought about that when I saw the picture above. I absolutely love it. I got a bit carried away looking for some other inspiring word-tattoos.

Even one word can mean a lot.

I think this way too long, but I do loved the quote!

Postcrossing

All of you probably have already heard about this, at least I did, but I never joined. I always wanted to, but just never did. Postcrossing is a website you can join to send and receive postcards to and from random people in the world. I always love finding a postcard in my mail and I suppose a lot of you love it too.
I started with sending a postcard to Germany, Finland and China and I'm now waiting to get some postcards from other people. I have to have a little patience, but I'm so excited!

A little bit about Postcrossing:
"The goal of this project is to allow people to receive postcards from all over the world, for free. Well, almost free! The main idea is that: if you send a postcard, you will receive at least one back from a random Postcrosser from somewhere in the world."

And I always love to look at the statistics. At this moment Postcrossing has 203,868 members in 210 countries. Most of the users are female. 5% of the users is Dutch. 4,951,369 cards were received with Postcrossing. These cards traveled 27,188,444,004 km (678,439 laps around the earth, 35,364 return trips to the moon).

Ofcourse I'll let you know when I receive some postcards!

Wow. I'm home again. Sorry to have kept you waiting. I've been to Paris, Lausanne, Venice, Ljubljana, Vienna, Prague and Munich. And Sunday I'm leaving to go to Milan and Rome. You're probably wondering how I'm keeping up with all that. The truth is, I'm not. But I had so much fun and have so many stories to tell. But for now I'm just going to bed and sleep until I wake up. Thailand!

This Sunday I'm leaving the beautiful Netherlands to visit a totally different part of this big world! Sunday evening my family and I are leaving on a jetplane to play the tourist in Thailand! So I'll be gone for a little more than 3 weeks! Unfortunately Karin will also be gone for another 2 weeks after I've left, so the blog will be on a summerbreak. Sorry for that!

And now, Thailand! We are going to make a selfplanned trip around all parts of Thailand (North - mountains, south - beach/islands, middle - city). We start our journey close to Bangkok. We will stay a few days with in a house with family, so we can get used to the climate and the whole idea of being on the other half of the world :P After that we (btw we is 8 people, my parents, little brother, aunt and uncle, two cousins and me) travel to Chiang Mai, there we'll make a trip in the mountains for a couple of days. Than it's time for Phuket, which is in the south, so there will be beach and islands and a lot of things to do like diving and visiting the James Bond Islands ^^. And last but not least we will visit Bangkok :D

I just got a text from Karin, Veerle and Salina! They are in Venice now, which inspired me to do a little post about that beautiful city! (Even though I've never been there... doesn't mean I don't want to! ^^)

HISTORY & GENERAL INFORMATION

Venice is a city in northern Italy known both for tourism and for industry, and is the capital of the region Veneto, with a population of 271,367. The name is derived from the ancient tribe of Veneti that inhabited the region in Roman times. The city historically was the capital of an independent city-state.
The city stretches across 117 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers.
The Republic of Venice was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades and the Battle of Lepanto, as well as a very important center of commerce (especially silk, grain and spice trade) and art in the 13th century up to the end of the 17th century. This made Venice a wealthy city throughout most of its history. It is also known for its several important artistic movements, especially the Renaissance period. Venice has played an important role in the history of symphonic and operatic music, and it is the birthplace of Antonio Vivaldi.

Venice has been featured in many many movies and books. For instance in a book (also movie by now) from one of my favourite writers, Cornelia Funke. The Thief Lord. It's about two young brothers, Prosper and Bo, who flee to Venice when people try to seperate them. In Venice they meet Scipio, The Thief Lord. It's a magical story!

Inspiration

What would life be without a little bit (or a little lot) of inspiration. If you google it you find a few definitions:

arousal of the mind to special unusual activity or creativity
a product of your creative thinking and work; "he had little respect for the inspirations of other artists"; "after years of work his brainchild was a tangible reality"
a sudden intuition as part of solving a problem
divine guidance: (theology) a special influence of a divinity on the minds of human beings; "they believe that the books of Scripture were written under divine guidance"
arousing to a particular emotion or action

But I'm not quite sure that describes it all. So here are the 5 main things that right now inspire me to do the things I like:

ONE love
"love is a many splendid thing, love lifts us up where we belong, all you need is love"

Through love you see things differently and you meet new people and new habits. That's why my biggest inspiration is love. Last Saturday my boyfriend and I celebrated that we are together one year and it felt so good, romantic, lovely ;) It inspired me for the photoshoot Karin and I did the next day (you'll hear about that later, she got the pictures and she is in PARIS!)

Holiday!

This morning, Karin left for Paris! (And many many other amazing places) She is going on a interrail tour with Veerle and Salina (two of our friends). And that means,,.

I will be bloggin' the next two weeks. Something I (shame on me) haven't done in a while. Since my vacation started (not officially, but it feels like it) I mostly spent my days with my boyfriend, by the pool or watching Charmed (my favourite serie at the moment, and believe it changes fast!)

Anyway, I have a plan to post a little something every day, but you know us a bit by now, and planning is our best feature... (A)

I admit, we do not post as often as we should or as often as we would like. What surprised me this last week was that we got more followers (Thank you so much!) while we didn't post anything. H&M Wishlist

I was surprised to see that my last H&M Wishlist dates back to January. I thought it would be fun to do a new one. H&M is probably one of my favourite stores. Summer is finally here, so time for a summer wishlist.

Isn't this one pretty? I love how simple it is. And it's perfect for an important party.

I actually own this one. I love a pretty blue blouse in the summer.

Floral print dresses are, in my opinion, a must-have. Not that I own one. Yet.

I love this jacket and couldn't let it just hanging there in the store. Isn't it pretty?

I love basics. And blue.

I'm really into green lately. And I think that this skirt is really beautiful.

Roman Holiday & When In Rome

In a few weeks a friend and I are going to Rome! We're so excited to see this famous old city. To prepare ourselves and mostly to have some fun, we had a little movie night yesterday. We watched two movies that were filmed in Rome.

First.. Roman Holiday.

Roman Holiday is a 1953 movie still completely in black and white with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. 118 minutes of old music, an amazing sense of style and the lovely manners that unfortunately seem to have disappeared these days. It's about a princess that escapes from the ambassade in Rome and meets a journalist. Together they have their own little holiday in Rome. It was really fun to watch this and I wanted to give you a little impression. If you like this kind of things, you should definitely watch this one!

And second... When In Rome.

After Roman Holiday we wanted to see some colour. The world isn't black and white anymore. Nor is Rome. When in Rome is a 2010 romantic comedy with Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel. When Beth goes to her sister's wedding in Rome, she ends up drunk in the 'fountain of love'. She picks up four coins that people threw in the fountain, which turns out to be not as innocent as she thought. Four men are now desperately in love with her and follow her everywhere. And of course, she finds her own love in the end. It's such an amazing movie! We laught till we had tears in our eyes! And that is a good thing.

Anyway, Both movies are really worth watching.

Who doesn't love cupcakes? I can't imagine someone that doesn't. Whether you like something sweet or something salt... You can always find something you like. I know liking cupcakes is a bit obvious for a girl like me, but who cares? Anyway, I found Ming Makes Cupcakes over at Wish Wish Wish.

1. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

As some of you already know, I decided that it was time to read all the books on the bookmark I got from my parents. 50 Books to read before you die. I think a book lover like me should definitely read those books. So I challenged myself to read the 50 books this year. To show you I mean it, I read the whole Lord of the Rings this week. Which wasn't that much of a challenge, because the books are amazing. But if I want to finish the list I should read more than one book every week. Anyway, I promised to tell you something about every book I read.

(This is the version I read, quite an old one, in Dutch.)

I love the Lord of the Rings movie ever since my mother said I should watch them when I was ill and bored to death. Eventhough everbody always told me that books were so much better, I was pretty content with the long hours sitting and watching Middle-earth on screen. But now that has changed. I discovered, not to my surprise though, that the books are wonderful. They changed a lot of things in the films. Which I think is a good thing, otherwise no one could follow it. But the books leave more to your imagination and you really find yourself in Middle-earth feeling sorry for Frodo and hoping he'll make it. Which -of course- he does. And I love the elves, the relationship between Éowyn and Faramir and how those Ents take down Isengard. But I won't give too much lovely details away, you should read the books yourself. Really, when you finally commit yourself and decide you're going to read them you'll enjoy it.

So. This is it. The beginning of the list. The next one is 1984 by George Orwell. I think everyone had heard about this book -and every other book on the list- and I hope it is as fascinating as people say it is.

Quite some time ago, my parents bought me a bookmark with a list:
50 Books to read before you die.
On the list are a lot of famous must-read books. Since I'm a huge fan of reading I really hope to read the whole list. And I figured.. The next months I have some free time... So this is the challenge: I have to read those 50 Books this year. That means I've got a lot of reading to do. I'll post a little something about each book. Fortunately, I already read a few of them. Unfortunately, the list begins with The Lord of the Rings triology, which of course are three books instead of one. We have Lord of the Rings in or book collection at home and I will start tomorrow. Interior Inspiration

I'm painting and decorating my new room next week so I'm constantly thinking about colours and furniture and wonderful things to make it my own little place it the house. I figured you wouldn't mind seeing some inspiration.

I love pastel and light colours, so my room is going to be very light purple with a lot of white.

There's going to be a wall like this, probably a bit smaller where I can collect different things I love.

I have a lot of books and picture frames and what they did with this wall looks fun.
I like the feeling of this room, but I'm not that fond of the couch.

I think you get the look I'm going for. I hope it turns out very pretty :)

Yesterday I went to an amazing local festival! It's called "Klomppop" and this was the 30th edition!
My boyfriend and I jumped on our bikes at 11:00 and arrived around 11:30 at the festivalgrounds. We bought our ticket (€5,- cheaper then when we would buy it after 13:00!!), listened to a small local metal band, Dehumanisation, and went home to get something to eat and get a coat.

Around 16:15 we were back, just in time for Go Back to the Zoo!! An amazing dutch band who just scored a hit with there song Electric!

After Go Back to the Zoo came Nuff Said, I didn't know them, but they really surprised me! There music is perfect for a festival, easy to dance on and a lot of fun to listen to!

After Nuff Said we went to eat something, missed Stream of Passion, a heavy metal band, so I didn't really mind about that. But when we came back we heard an amazing sound coming out of the tents. The Irish band Delorentos just started! That energy! Absolutely awesome! After the performance they distributed their album "In love with detail", for free! I'm listening to it right now, and it is super!

After this amazing performance we had like no time to catch our breath because there she was, CARO EMERALD! practicly thé reason I went to Klomppop! She is a sensation! She got the crowd dancing with her jazzband, an inspiring combination of a bariton saxophone, saxophone, contrabass, trumpet, piano, guitar and a dj! And they really made a show out of it, with man in suits and with (sun)glasses. Very 50's, 60's!

After Caro Emerald we had to give our feet some rest, but not for long because after Saint Jude, an English rockband, there was Moke!! An other dutch sensation! You could see they had so much fun while on stage!

Brownies

We LOVE brownies. We thought you probably would like our favourite recipe for them. These brownies honestly never disappointed me. So here you go, a lovely recipe for the most amazing brownies!

Ingredients:
- 140 g Butter
- 4 Eggs
- 340 g Brown Sugar
- Salt
- 1 Thee spoon Vanilla Extract
- 75 g Cocoa powder
- 140 g Flower
- 150 g Chocolate (It doesn't really matter what kind of chocolate, your choice!)

Slowly melt the butter and let it cool down. Mix the eggs careful with the sugar until all chunks are gone. Mix the butter and the vanilla extract with the mixture of eggs and sugar. Sieve a little bit of salt, the cocoa powder and the flower. Mix this with the other ingredients. But mix very slowly and carefully, otherwise it turns into cake instead of brownies. Cut down the chocolate into little chunks. And add this to the mixture.

Heat the oven to 170 C. Pour the mixture into a pastry mold. Put your brownies in the oven for about 35 or 40 minutes.

I went to Paris a few weeks ago and promised you a lot of photographs.You can't imagine how many photos I took! So I've made several posts to show you the prettiest things, the loveliest buildings and the most amazing sights. This is part one.

This is me taking photographs. I thought it would be a nice little introduction. You can see the Eiffeltower in the background. I went to Paris once before. It's an amazing city and I had a great time there.

I love how this place made everything look so happy with all the chairs in different bright colours.

Don't you love this? When I see something like this I'm finally sure I really am in Paris and not at home.

Chocolate cookies with the eiffeltower on them! I have to mention that I wasn't being a total tourist. We actually brought these with us from home and didn't notice the eiffeltower until we were eating them. ;)What is it with Paris and coloured chairs? It looks so happy!

Interior Inspiration

I've been ill for almost three weeks now. I can't stand being tired anymore. It makes me tired. Slowly I'm beginning to pick up the pieces. So it's time to start posting again. Not a lot though, just when I feel like it. (:

A few years ago I wanted to be a interior designer. Not anymore, but I still love to decorate rooms, deciding where everything should go, finding creative solutions, which colours to use... Luckily, my little sister is getting my room and I hers this summer. Which means that I can paint, decorate and have some fun all over again! Yay!

I've convinced myself that it's not too soon to start collecting lovely ideas and inspirational pictures. So here are a few I came across (I'm afraid that I don't know where all of these photographs come from, so if you recognize anything, please tell me)

I love this. It's so cute. My favourite things are the clock and the writing. The writing is amazing, I definetely have to remember that!

I'll never have such a huge room, but the feeling of it is pretty wonderful. I also love the blue colour with the wood and white.

The idea of using a lot of different frames with different uses is brilliant! I also like that the colours are not the same. It's not perfect, but that's probably what makes it perfect.

Again white, wood and colour. I love that combination. And those little boxes on the wall!

Old keys are amazing. To use those shapes in this way is beautiful. The gold with the dark blue is very pretty.

I hope you enjoy interior design posts. Because I'm planning on posting more. Which one is your favourite?

(500) Days of Summer

I've wanted to see the movie '(500) Days of Summer' for quite some time. So Fleur and I saw it this week. It's such a lovely movie. The whole concept of love that isn't returned is not that original. But the I never saw a movie like this. There was one scene that reminded us of 'Enchanted'. I really enjoyed that one.

The soundtrack is amazing and we both love Zooey Deschanel (and her sister, who is the actrice that playes Bones). Anyway, to make you want to see it.. You can watch the trailer here.

I made muffins last week. They were delicious. I can't remember why I didn't make them before. When spring arrives and little flowers start to pop up, my mind starts to have a way of its own and keeps telling me I have to photograph in stead of doing homework. Naturally, I made photographs of the muffins.

I thought it would be fun to show us more of our photography rather then always showing the work of other people. This is the result!

I promised you a DIY today. So here it is. Quite some time ago I made these button earrings:

It's really simple.

First you buy/collect/pick out a few sets of 2 buttons:

Then you buy those little pieces of metal you put behind the buttons. I don't know what they're called, but you can buy them at every shop where they have supplies to make jewellery. And make sure you have some glue that can be used on both metal and buttons (My buttons were made of plastic, wood and metal so I just used a glue that works on all those materials)

You probably already guessed what happens next! Just glue the buttons onto those metal things.

It's also funny to use some thread in the buttons, then it looks like you really have a button on your ear. I haven't done this, because I thought of it later.

Just let it dry for a day. And then you have your earrings..

Hi!

We kind of fixed the problem with my computer. It's working and I can work on These Lovely Things. Unfortunately, my keyboard doesn't work that well and sometimes he types a letter without my permission.
But who cares, I have acces to internet again..

One of my favourite things is milk. I just love to drink milk.Unfortunately, I managed to throw some of it on my laptop and now it doesn't work like it should. All my school stuff is on it, so the teachers weren't that pleased. I can still use another computer at home, but since the time on this computer is a little limited I won't post that much.

I'm sorry. I have so much to show you.. You need to have a little more patience.

Floral Print Dresses

Although they kind of remind me of 'grandmother dresses' I really like floral print dresses. I don't own one. Yet. I just love the summery feeling they have. It makes me want to go outside, sit in the sun and make smoothies. :) So I've selected 4 pretty ones to show you. Every single one is a little bit different, but I wouldn't mind throwing them in my closet for the first sunny day!

Which one do you prefer?

Hee everyone :)

I'm back again as well :D I had an amzing week with a few of my wonderful friends and a lot of snow :) But right now I feel a little unsettled, a little lost.. And I haven't found the time and peace yet to make new posts. I hope that I will feel better next week so I can post some beautiful pieces again ^^. I 'll hope to post at least another Pure Beauty tomorrow ;)

I'm back. Paris was a-ma-zing. Seriously, you really have to go there if you can.

Interior Design - A little inspiration
